Bristol Blue Glass

The Bristol Blue Glass team approached Thought and Mortar to update their existing Shopify store to meet the changing needs of their business with a keen focus on improving usability and the overall look and feel of the site.

Bristol Blue Glass is a Bristol institution, making some of the best free-blown tableware in England, so we were over the moon when they approached us to rethink their existing Shopify site. They offer outstandingly beautiful and unique glass products and experiences from teeny-tiny dinky glass sculptures to blow your own glass workshops.

The challenges

The Bristol Blue Glass team felt their existing Shopify store and branding had become outdated, with inconsistent product imagery and a lack of clear creative direction for online merchandising.

They were also frustrated with the user experience, both for customers and staff; product setup, categorisation, and site navigation had grown confusing and difficult to manage.

A major challenge was rethinking the booking system for their experience-based products, especially for group sessions. The third-party app they had relied on carried a monthly fee, so we aimed to deliver a more cost-effective, tailored solution that also resolved the pain points they had long struggled with.

The solutions

From early discussions with the Bristol Blue Glass team, it was clear that a full brand refresh and site redesign — followed by a rebuild — would be the most effective way to address both their design and functionality challenges.

Key features

  • Product photography strategy and guidance

    • Provided creative guidance for product photography, strengthening their brand identity and consistency across the site.

  • BookEasy for appointment booking

    • Replaced the previous paid booking app with an adapted free tool, eliminating high monthly ongoing subscription costs while improving the booking experience for both customers and staff.

  • Custom-built approach for gift wrapping and engraving

    • Removed reliance on third-party apps by creating a tailored solution, giving the team more control and simplifying the purchasing experience as well as improving performance of the site by minimising third-party code.

  • Enhanced filters and search via product metafields

    •  Improved customer navigation and searchability, while making product management easier and more structured for the internal team.

Blending heritage with modernity

Working closely with the Bristol Blue Glass team, we successfully delivered a modernised Shopify store that not only captured the beauty and craftsmanship of their products but also significantly improved functionality for both customers and staff. Through a carefully guided brand refresh, enhanced photography standards, a cost-effective booking solution, and smarter product management tools, the new site is more intuitive, visually striking, and built for future growth.

By eliminating ongoing app costs, simplifying backend processes, and creating a site that better tells the Bristol Blue Glass story, the team can now focus on what they do best — creating stunning, hand-crafted glass and unforgettable experiences — while their online presence works seamlessly in the background.

We're proud to have helped a true Bristol institution evolve its digital home without losing the heritage and character that makes it so unique.
